October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are many international, national, and local initiatives that aim to raise awareness and money. Like the CIBC Run for the Cure, which was back at the beginning of the month.

For Cupcakes (2887 West Broadway @ Bayswater) owner Heather, this month hits close to home:

Heather’s mom, Kathie White, has been the friendly voice of Cupcakes, order desk since Heather & Lori opened the doors to Cupcakes on Denman in March 2002.

During a routine mammogram in June 2007, Kathie’s doctor diagnosed her with stage one breast cancer at the age of 59. She underwent an intensive bout of radiation therapy twice a day for 5 days and is now part of a research study group to help fight Breast Cancer. Kathie now takes Tamoxifen and will be considered cancer free in 5 years.

This whole month, they will be selling pink “C-cup” cupcakes, and for each of these cupcakes sold, they will donate $1 to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
