The 2010 Winter Games are less than four years away and according to the Vancouver Courier, Kitsilano is the original home of short-track speed skating in BC.
Yes, we have a Speed Skating Club, which was formed, Phoenix-like, out of the ashes of the old Kitsilano Speed Skating Club. The club is of the short-track variety, since there isn’t an oval in the Lower Mainland-not until the one in Richmond is built. The Kitsilano club’s membership dipped to between six and nine members by the time it was, well, iced. It reformed last year as the Vancouver Speed Skating Club and now has 44 members. Club coach LeMay is the sister of Catriona LeMay Doan. Ailsa actually introduced Catriona, who was Canada’s queen of the long track ice, to the sport.
Six to nine members? This blog may actually be more popular than short-track speed skating in Kitsilano. Sweet.
