How safe is the Safeway parking lot?

1910

SafewayDoes anybody know what happened at Safeway on West 4th today? When Mikey and I drove by at 7pm the store was closed and the entire parking lot was taped off with yellow crime scene tape . There was at least 10 police cars surrounding the area and a couple firemen were busy hosing down the parking lot – it looked like it might have been messy.

We dropped by a couple hours later and all was back to normal, however, when I quized the Safeway customer service staff about what had happened, all they could say was that "there was an accident". Nothing more.

That’s a pretty busy area. If anybody else knows what happened, feel free to comment.

  1. Kits Reporter says:

The ticker on the TV news this morning said that a man was run over.

  2. Charles says:

A man in his 50s was run over by a delivery truck.

What I really don’t understand is why almost all neighbourhood grocery stores are so geared towards car traffic and have parking in the front of these stores. True, the majority of people shopping for groceries drive up in cars but what about people walking in and out? Why should people have no choice but walk through a parking lot? I can’t count the times I’ve has close calls being run over while walking into this Safeway. Cars speed in from 4th Ave on the southeastern side where bushes and a large tree block their view.

Why not design these high traffic stores with parking in the back? Parking lot and an entrance in the back for car traffic and an entrance in the front for walking traffic. Just the urban planner in me I guess, the streetscape would look much more appealing too.

  3. Sad news says:

The Vancouver Province reported on this: A man died in the parking lot of the Safeway at West 4th Avenue and Vine Street yesterday after he was crushed by the rear wheels of a large delivery truck.
