Kitsilano’s shoreline will come alive later this month with the sights and sounds of Throw a Boat Down, a one-of-a-kind floating concert and fundraiser in support of Indigenous-led environmental justice.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Jericho Beach, the event invites attendees to grab a paddleboard, kayak, canoe—or simply a beach blanket—and take in an evening of live music, sunset views, and community solidarity on the water. Paddlers are encouraged to launch at 6:30 PM, while land-based guests can settle in by 7:00 PM for the main show.
Proceeds from the June 26th event will go directly to RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs), supporting the Heiltsuk Nation’s ongoing legal case to uphold marine protection and Indigenous stewardship rights. The lawsuit stems from the 2016 Nathan E. Stewart oil spill, which devastated Heiltsuk territory in B.C.’s Central Coast and highlighted gaps in federal accountability for coastal safety.
In a format that merges art and activism, Throw a Boat Down features live performances from some of East Van’s favourite funk, soul, and groove musicians. Headliners are set to be announced on the day of the show, with organizers promising an energetic and joyful atmosphere that underscores a serious cause.
The floating stage—hosted aboard the historic sailing vessel Providence—will serve as a visual and symbolic anchor for an event that champions Indigenous rights and climate justice.
Tickets range from $15 to $25 and are available through Humanitix. Whether you’re paddling into the concert or lounging on the beach, the event offers a powerful reminder that joy and justice can—and should—coexist on the waves.
