The Vancouver Park Board has announced that Kitsilano Pool—an iconic summer destination and the city’s only saltwater outdoor pool—will not open as scheduled this May. Instead, the popular waterfront facility is now expected to reopen in mid-June due to ongoing infrastructure repairs.
Originally slated to launch the outdoor swim season, Kitsilano Pool’s delayed opening is attributed to issues discovered during seasonal maintenance.
“Kits Pool is more than 50 years old and in its end-of-life phase, which means annual maintenance and potential repairs will continue to be necessary,” the Park Board said in a statement.
Staff began prep work as soon as weather allowed, but additional attention is now required before the pool can safely welcome swimmers.
To help fill the gap, Second Beach Pool in Stanley Park will open on Saturday, May 17, with extended operating hours to meet expected demand. New Brighton Pool will also open that day, and Maple Grove Pool in Kerrisdale is scheduled to open June 15.
The city will also begin staffing all nine of its swimming beaches with lifeguards starting May 17 to ensure safe access to Vancouver’s shorelines.
Officials acknowledged that Kitsilano Pool holds a “special place in the hearts of Vancouverites” and said they are committed to providing timely updates as repair work progresses.
