B.C. Premier Christy Clark announced Friday that Burrard Street Bridge will be closed on June 21, the International Day of Yoga (IDY), for a mass yoga class.

CBC reported on the strong social media response from Vancouver residents, which can be summarized as: “Only in Vancouver.”

The class will result in a seven-hour closure of one of the main connectors from downtown to the city’s West Side. The government has partnered with Lululemon and yoga studio YYoga to organize what they hope will be the largest IDY event to be hosted outside India. Natural Gas company Altagas is also supporting, with a $10,000 sponsorship.

Though the bridge will be closed to vehicles from 4 a.m. until 11 a.m. PT June 21, the big yoga stretch proper will begin at 8.30 a.m. and involve an hour-long yoga session.

Too bad Vancouver doesn’t have a 1,000 acre urban park or something. They would have had a more peaceful and less disruptive place to go…

#Omthebridge, y’all.
