A new Japanese hand roll bar has quietly opened its doors on West 4th Avenue, adding another fresh dining option to Kitsilano’s ever-evolving food scene.

Kagura Hand Roll Bar is now welcoming guests at 2036 West 4th Avenue, introducing a counter-style dining experience centered on freshly made sushi hand rolls, also known as temaki. The restaurant joins a growing trend of hand roll bars in Vancouver, but brings the concept west to one of the neighbourhood’s busiest commercial strips.

The focus at Kagura is on simplicity, freshness, and timing. Hand rolls are prepared to order and served immediately, designed to be eaten moments after they’re made while the nori is still crisp and the ingredients at their peak. Guests are seated at the counter, where they can watch rolls being assembled in front of them, creating a more interactive and intimate experience than traditional sushi dining.

During its initial opening phase, Kagura has been offering a limited menu, including hand roll sets that combine several rolls with classic sides like edamame. According to early reports, the team plans to expand the offering over time, with tempura dishes expected to become a larger part of the menu as the restaurant fully ramps up.

The space itself is described as cozy and understated, leaning into a casual neighbourhood feel rather than a formal sushi bar atmosphere. That approach aligns well with Kitsilano’s laid-back dining culture, where residents often look for high-quality food without pretense.

Kagura’s arrival also adds momentum to West 4th Avenue’s dining corridor, which has seen a steady mix of new restaurants, cafés, and takeout spots opening alongside long-standing neighbourhood favourites. For locals, it offers another option for a quick lunch, a casual dinner, or a bite before or after shopping along the strip.
