The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) is set to return for its 44th edition next month, bringing 11 days of world-class cinema, live performances, and industry programming to venues across the city.
Running October 3–12, this year’s festival features more than 435 screenings, including 170 feature films and 100 shorts spread across 13 screens at 10 venues. VIFF is preparing to welcome over 110,000 attendees, with nearly 130 titles holding premiere status.
The festival opens with Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, a dramatization of the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, and closes with Ido Fluk’s Köln 75, which recounts the story behind Keith Jarrett’s legendary 1975 concert.
Highlights include a special Spotlight on Korea featuring films by Park Chan-wook and Hong Sangsoo, as well as world premieres from emerging Korean directors. Other anticipated Canadian premieres include new works from Jim Jarmusch, Noah Baumbach, and Paolo Sorrentino, along with Cannes award winners by Jafar Panahi and Joachim Trier.
B.C.’s film industry will also take center stage, with world premieres from local directors Mayumi Yoshida, Jennifer Chiu, Kent Donguines, Jenn Strom, and Bryce Hodgson.
Beyond the screen, VIFF Live returns with five events blending cinema and music, while VIFF Talks and Industry Days bring together international creatives and business leaders. The festival will also host the Signals Creative Tech Expo with DigiBC, exploring the intersection of film, technology, and culture.
“It’s such a joy to be part of a festival on the rise, and to host this momentous celebration of film and film culture,” said Kyle Fostner, VIFF’s executive director.
