ABOUT THE FOOD

FOOD PHILOSOPHY: The Oakwood Canadian Bistro is an unpretentious neighbourhood room specializing in down-to-earth Canadian fare. The food is fresh and honest as are the price points which range from $5 to $20. Young Executive Chef Michael Robbins crafts dishes from local, sustainable products. The menu changes seasonally based on market-availability. All meats are organic and free of hormones and antibiotics, while the seafood is sustainable, seasonal and Ocean Wise certified. You can bet that condiments and burger buns are all made in house.

DINNER: Oakwood Canadian Bistro’s Fall/Winter dinner menu reads like a succinct round-up of the best comfort cuisine. Find a cozy spot by the Oakwood fireplace to enjoy the Oakwood’s French onion soup with caramelized onion, beef broth and smoked cheddar crostini. Other menu highlights include seared sable fish with winter greens, spiced tomato broth and caraway crostini and strip loin steak with kennebec hash, onion jam and dijon hollondaise. The thick AAA Burger (recently voted the best burger in Vancouver) is a menu staple no matter what the season. The burger comes on a house-made poppy seed brioche bun with buttermilk fried onion and smoked cheddar.

DESSERT: For dessert, you’ll be forced to choose between comforting options like a spiced, baked apple dumpling with vanailla ice cream, or the beet and carrot cake with creamy blue cheese icing and candied walnuts.

BRUNCH: Chef Robbins does weekends right at the Oakwood with a brunch that features a tasty selection of dishes for $10 each, plus the tempting possibility to order the $15 burger for breakfast. Don’t miss the albacore tuna nicoise benedict or the braised short rib served with fried eggs, marinated tomato and potato pancake. If you’ve got that morning sweet tooth, opt for the delicate stuffed brioche French toast with blueberry mascarpone. Wash it down with 49th Parallel’s artisan coffee.

about the drinks

BEER/WINE: The Oakwood bar takes the same approach to sourcing ingredients as the kitchen. Belly up and revel at the 11 local craft brews on tap, from Howe Sound Devil’s IPA to Driftwood Fat Tug. The Oakwood’s wine selection includes B.C. vineyards like Tantalus and Kettle Valley.

COCKTAILS: Expect a Caesar with a genuine peppery punch and a complex finish, thanks to the signature dill seed, salt and coriander rim. The Oakwood margarita is a simple and sweet bar fave, made with El Jimador, fresh mint and the house simple syrup.
