Hunkered down at home with the baby during these annual downpours? Here are ten fun, developmentally stimulating activities in Kitsilano to sign up for this spring. They are all especially suited for those wee ones not quite running mini-marathons throughout the house. Visit the corresponding websites for more details on dates, times, and registration.

10 Spring Activities for Babies and Teeny Tots in Kitsilano

1. Water Babies
Aquaventures swimming lessons are perfect for first timers because of the smaller class sizes and warmer water temperatures, compared to most community centre pools.  Classes safely introduce the fun of water, while providing some exercise and socialization for both baby and parent.

Free trial fitness classes at the Kitsilano Community Centre

White Canvas Shoes

According to the New York Times, the top new years resolution in 2012 is, not surprisingly, to get into shape. After having a baby and spending a month where cookies were a food group and pie was a perfectly acceptable breakfast, I too resolve to move a little more and eat a little less.

After taking part in a free class on Tuesday, I have joined a mom and baby boot camp at the Kitsilano Community Centre. If you are also looking to get into shape in 2012, registration for winter classes is currently taking place. Consider checking out some of the other free trial classes  offered now at the Kitsilano Community Centre before you register. Free trial classes include:

Callanetics – tone and lift muscles fast and you leave feeling great!
Free trial class Jan 9, 8:00-9:00pm.

Afro’Robics – Aerobic fitness, blending the richness of African dance and music with traditional history and culture to create a fun and exciting workout! Free trial class Jan 11, 5:45-6:45pm.

Bread making class at the Kits Community Center and Recipe

Kitsilano Community Centre Culinary Arts

I recently took a bread making class at the Kitsilano Community Center. Together with nine of my neighbours we got kneading! In only three hours we made lemon and lavender scones, smoked salmon and dill scones, grape focaccia, multigrain bread, pita bread, porter house rolls and, my favourite, whole wheat honey bread  which I love because it’s easy to make and works well with sandwiches. (recipe after the jump).  The class was held in a commercial kitchen and was totally hands-on. I got some great baking tips and left with several new recipes and tons of goodies. My whole family was in a carb induced coma all week!

The next bread making class is being held March 13 from 6-9 pm. The community center also offers a variety of other culinary classes including Mediterranean cooking, holiday baking, vegetarian cooking and more. They even have culinary classes for kids. At $59, a culinary class in the neighbourhood might make a great holiday gift for the young or old aspiring chef in your life. Read more ›
