Valentine’s Day Giveaway Final Day:
$50 to Local Public Eatery, who is hosting an Anti-Valentine’s Party aka a Stop Light Party February 14.
This post is for the anti-Valentines, un-Valentines, the nontraditionalists, haters and daters. Local Public Eatery is hosting an Anti-Valentine’s Day Party alternative February 14, for those who prefer DJs and drink specials to candle light and crooning.
Local will provide Stop Light Party guests with coloured ribbons to signify their “status.” Green means single; A yellow ribbon means you might be, or could soon be single; Red ribbons signify that you’re taken.
Whether you’re on the market, unsure about your status, or dating but not into traditional Valentine’s Day celebrations, Local is the beach front party destination for you.
Share a cocktail in a boot (Lucky Lemonade, El Caeser, Kung Fu Punch, Baja Margarita) and any of Local’s six variations on the 1/2 lb. chuck burger with a new acquaintance. You may find you’re still chatting over their signature gooey chocolate brownie.
How to win:
Like “Kitsilano.ca” on Facebook or comment on our daily Facebook wall post with the prize. We will choose one winner Saturday morning, Feb. 11.

Thursday, January 26 a dog walker by the Maritime Museum stumbled upon a boot with “grisly” contents (bone fragments) that had washed up on the beach. Although the find initially seemed like the stuff of crime television, BC Coroners office consulted with a forensic anthropologist, who classified the bones as belonging to a marine mammal. They concluded that the flotsam accidentally washed up together.
It wasn’t a wild stretch of imagination to start by guessing the remains were human. According to The Province: “Since August 2007, nine human feet have been found along the shoreline in southwestern B.C.; the coroners service has made positive identifications on six of them.”

Summer on Kits Beach is never dull. We’re stoked about this late summer beach party and sporting event, KitsFest, which takes place August 12-14.
What
KitsFest celebrates community and healthy living with three vigorous days of sports tournaments. The event has serious scope with sports ranging from basketball, beach tennis and volleyball to weird and wonderful recreation like beach hockey. We’re not kidding. Beach hockey is a real, crowd-drawing sport and it’s going to get its own blog post tomorrow.
When
August 12-14, 9AM to 8PM daily. Visit the website for more details.
Where
KitsFest takes place on Kits Beach. $5 all-day parking is available with EasyPark at the H.R. MacMillan Planetarium–only a 5 minute walk away.
Why
Because we’re sporty Vancouverites. Sweating makes us happy.
Who runs it? Who participates?
KitsFest was launched in 2009 by the Canada One Foundation. The Canada One Foundation reinvests proceeds from KitsFest into the community. Last year Canada One contributed $50,000 to resurfacing the Kits Beach basketball courts. This year they plan to redo the tennis courts.
KitsFest invites all ages to participate. Sports teams can register in advance on the KitsFest website. Family-friendly activities will take place throughout the event. Think face painting, obstacle courses, games and sports (including public ice skating on the silicone ice rink), plus good eats from local restos.
Highlights
Skate-able Silicone Gel Ice Rink on Beach | Killer Kid Zone | Face Painting | Beach Tennis | Baseline Bistro with food from LOCAL Public Eatery and Chronic Tacos
Weather Forecast
Sunny | Low of 14°C | High of 23°C.

Rookie fireworks can leave you underwhelmed, but Vancouver’s annual Celebration of Light which started two decades ago is the real deal. Seven tons of fireworks are set to blast across Vancouver skyline over three nights, starting this Saturday, July 30.
This year’s Celebration is presented by SHORE 104.3, and is titled the “Battle Of Champions” with three feisty nations duking it out for the title. The line-up is: China (July 30), Spain (August 3) and Canada (August 6).

Given that China is the country with the first documented use of fireworks in the 7th century, there should be enough rambunctious pyrotechnics at Saturday’s light show to get the most jaded skygazer’s heart thumping.
But there’s more happening than the basic boom and shimmer. Each night, SHORE 104.3 will simulcast the accompanying fireworks soundtrack beginning at 10:00pm. If you prefer live music, drop by a SHOREfest stage location (listed below) and check out the bands. There will be three stages–two of which are in Kits.
Here are the details you need to see the Celebration of Light:
FIVE BEST SPOTS TO WATCH IN KITS
1) 104.3 SHOREfest at The Rogue Stage by the Maritime Museum. This stage will feature Leeroy Stagger, Kevin Kane (of Grapes of Wrath), The Sojourners and more, starting at 7:00 pm.
2) YVR Community Stage in Kitsilano featuring the SHORE 104.3 Song Search 2011 Top 10 & 2010 Song Search winner Zaac Pick. Stage located between Kits Pool and Kits Beach along the concrete walkway, music starting at 7:00 pm.
3) Vanier Park has a clear line to the sky over English Bay without the blowing sand.
4) Hadden Park is a sweet little nook with a view.
5) Kits Point has plenty of runway space to spread a blanket and break out the snacks.
WHEN IT’S GOING DOWN

 | Country: China
 | Theme: “China Storm”
Wednesday, August 3 | Time: 10 to 10:25 pm

Getting tan is a goal that often appears at the top of the summer holiday agenda. The Canadian Cancer Society knows this. The Society also knows that no tan is safe. So they launched a clever social program at Kits Beach on Sunday to educate beach goers on how to enjoy the sun safely.
“Tanning is Out” ambassadors, the Burnadettes, mingled with the crowds at the Volleyball Open, displaying their burned fannies to one and all. Meanwhile the Canadian Cancer Society reps encouraged beach goers to sign a pledge to go tan-free this summer. They also covered the beach with shady havens/resort-style umbrellas.
“Tanning is Out” ambassadors the Burnadettes
It was not a sunny Sunday, but the Society’s message was clear: Having a tan is not healthy. When your skin changes colour, it’s damaged and that can lead to premature aging and skin cancer.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Canada, and melanoma skin cancer – the most deadly form of skin cancer – is one of the most common forms of cancer for people between the ages of 15 and 29.
The good news is it’s also the most preventable. Here’s more information on how to practice “sunsense.” For those who seek sunshine as a source of Vitamin D to maintain healthy bones and muscles, they’ve got advice for you too.
Convinced the only good tan is a spray tan? Sign the pledge to go tan-free this summer on the “Tanning is Out” Facebook page.

Kits Beach swarmed with happy sun worshipers and picnickers this weekend when the sun made a prolonged appearance. Is summer here to stay?

The long weekend marked the start of the first summer of the smoking ban, enacted September 1, 2010. Under the bylaw, smoking is now prohibited on beaches and in parks throughout Vancouver and a minimum fine of $250 can be issued to those who break the rules. Despite this, 24H Vancouver reports that over the long weekend, smokers in Kits lit up anyway. In fact, they openly defied the regulation.
While everyone agrees that smoking is unhealthy, even non smokers have come out against the park smoking ban. Some argue that while banning smoking in restaurants and other workplaces—places where non smokers and smokers coexist in a confined space—is a no brainer, banning smoking in a public outdoor space is too much. Opponents of the ban see the bylaw another paternalistic overstep from an already restrictive government.
According to 24H Vancouver, only five tickets have been issued since September 1. Vancouver Park Board chair Aaron Jasper emphasized educating smokers over fining them.
If the occasional smoker wants to light up outside and the Park Board isn’t really ticketing, perhaps there are non governmental ways of negotiating the smoking in parks issue. What do you think? Does Kits Beach need a smoking ban bylaw?
