The Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival returns to Vanier Park on June 9, launching its 37th season with a fresh, Vancouver-inspired take on The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Presented on the BMO Mainstage, the new production reimagines Shakespeare’s comedy in a modern setting—a fictional local community centre in a soccer-obsessed suburb. At the heart of the story is Falstaff, recast as a washed-up former soccer star whose overconfidence leads him into a series of comedic misadventures involving two clever women who quickly turn the tables.
Directed by Rebecca Northan, the show leans into physical comedy, music, and a distinctly local tone. “This is Shakespeare at his most playful and accessible,” said Artistic Director Christopher Gaze, calling it a high-energy production designed to connect with contemporary audiences.
The festival is also bringing back a range of special events throughout the summer, including Family Days, a Relaxed Performance, Pride Night, and post-show talkbacks with the cast. Pre-show “In a Nutshell” talks will run before every performance, offering a quick introduction to the story.
Tickets start at $30, with performances running through the summer at Vanier Park. As one of Vancouver’s signature seasonal events, Bard on the Beach continues to offer a uniquely local take on Shakespeare just steps from Kitsilano.
