Henry Hudson Elementary has officially reopened in Kitsilano, delivering a modern, seismically safe school designed to serve students, families, and the broader community for decades to come.

The rebuilt and expanded school adds 390 seismically safer seats and 145 new student spaces, helping address growing enrolment pressures in Vancouver. Two of the building’s three storeys are dedicated to classroom and learning spaces, including a new neighbourhood learning centre on the ground floor, while the top floor is home to an on-site child care centre.

Designed with flexible learning in mind, the school features student breakout areas, shared common spaces, a larger gymnasium, a new school field, and expanded outdoor play areas. The building was constructed to LEED Gold standards and is expected to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 75 percent while improving overall energy efficiency.

The main school building welcomed students in fall 2024, with the full expansion completed this fall.

To support local families, the City of Vancouver contributed nearly $10 million toward the project, creating 65 child care spaces for children from infancy to age five, along with 30 after-school care spaces operated in partnership with the Vancouver School District. Additional multi-purpose spaces will also support community programming.

Local officials say the project strengthens the heart of the Kitsilano community by bringing education, child care, and family supports together under one roof.
