Quietly nestled near Kitsilano Beach for over four decades, Kibune Sushi has closed its doors, marking the end of one of Vancouver’s most cherished Japanese dining experiences. The restaurant first welcomed guests on July 1, 1982, and remained a Kitsilano staple ever since.

Operated by the warm, elderly couple known to many as Julie‑San and Endo‑San, Kibune never appeared on Instagram or food tours—it was a hidden gem beloved by locals for its intimate, wood-paneled interior and unhurried, heartfelt service.

The restaurant’s soul lay in its simplicity and dedication: no MSG, a broth brewed overnight from two types of fermented dried fish flakes and kelp. That attention to detail, paired with a tranquil, homey vibe, is what made it truly Kitsilano.

News of the closure came via a Noms Mag community tipster—and now, the familiar address at 1508 Yew Street is poised for a new chapter.
