Kitsilano’s Old Hastings Mill Store Museum is in trouble.

Vancouver’s oldest building is managed by a volunteer-run, non-profit historical society on an annual budget of only $30,500 and was counting on a $10,000 community arts program grant from the City of Vancouver this year for operations.

With the museum closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, revenue from visitor donations has dried up and the city has pushed back approval of the grant program until the fall.

Last weekend the museum set up a GoFundMe page to help keep it going. In four days, the campaign has raised over $7,500 towards its $40,000 “rainy-day fund” goal.

The iconic “Old Mill Store” stood at the foot of Dunlevy Street, east of Gastown for more than 60 years, before it was rescued when Hastings Sawmill was slated for demolition.  The Store was barged to its current location on Point Grey and re-opened as a museum in 1931.
