The Squamish Nation has voted 87 per cent in favour of moving ahead on a $3-billion housing development project on reserve land in Kitsilano.

In partnership with Westbank Development, the Senakw project will see 6,000 rental housing units in 11 towers with heights up to 56 storeys on a 11.7-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Burrard Bridge and Vanier Park.

The development of the reserve lands at Sen?á?w represents the single largest development on First Nation lands in Canada.

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2021 and carried out over 15 to 20 years.

The first phase will be likely be rental, with future phases determined by market conditions.

Between 150 and 200 units will be available to Nation members at a discounted rate compared to the prevailing market price.
