In October 2017, Premier John Horgan announced that the province would spend $25 million to replace Kitsilano’s Bayview Community Elementary school as it is in danger of major damage or collapsing during an earthquake.

Located at 2251 Collingwood Street, Bayview school is a historically significant landmark in Kitsilano and has topped Heritage Vancouver’s annual Top 10 endangered sites list.

Built in 1913 in the Classical Revival style, Bayview is one of Vancouver’s most impressive Edwardian-era elementary schools.

With six weeks left in the school year, packing up the school has begun. Next year Bayview students will study in temporary portables at Queen Elizabeth Elementary while a new Bayview Elementary is built on the old site.

The old school will be demolished this summer and the new school is expected to be completed by 2021.

If you’re interested in saying goodbye to the old school, attend their Community Farewell Open House on Wednesday, June 19th from 3-7pm at 2251 Collingwood Street.

Join us in saying goodbye to a building students have walked through for over a century. Enjoy a roaming “tour” of Bayview history as Kitsilano historical characters are brought to life by “Live History” Theatre. Walk through the school and reminisce. Display of Bayview memorabilia and historical artifacts in the gym. There will be refreshments for sale.
