Kitsilano’s favourite Mexican restaurant Topanga Café was engulfed in a fire early this morning.

Located at 2904 West 4th Avenue, the Topanga Café was opened 40 years ago by Helen Zallen with her three sons Joe, Tom and Morris.

The Zallen family owned and operated The Topanga Cafe until 2007 when Andrew Pyatt, a longtime employee, took over ownership.

Approximately 50 firefighters attended a fire which engulfed several businesses on the south side of West 4th Avenue between Macdonald and Bayswater streets.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this point.

Update: The fire that destroyed Kitsilano’s Topanga Cafe has been ruled accidental. The blaze was likely caused by discarded cigarette or some other ‘smoking material’ says fire officials.
