With Moderne Burger no more, and Mission closed too now (not that Mission did burgers, but still…), where should one go when searching for the perfect burger?

Here’s our list of the best three right now in our Kitsilano neighbourhood.

Au Comptoir

Oui! Our Parisian-inspired brunch favourite actually does a proper burger. They call it the Burger Maison and you can order the patty just the way you like it since they use house-ground beef. This means you can finally have a medium-rare burger, which is rare around these parts. The burger comes sandwiched in a nice warm, soft bun, and is served with French fries, of course, put the real kicker is the added option of foie gras. And you can add bacon, too, or both. Why not.

The Ellis

The suave-looking Ellis pub does an excellent beef burger, but it’s their Garden Burger that excels here. It’s made with a panko-breaded chickpea patty, and topped with a cashew cream “cheese”, sliced red onions, avocado wedges, fresh tomato, alfalfa sprouts, and lettuce. You get a choice of thick-cut Kennebec fries or a side salad, or upgrade to poutine or a soup. Add-ons include bacon and extra avocado. And for dessert, The Ellis makes lovely beignets in a choice of chocolate, peanut butter mousse, lemon curd, or berry. Enjoy it all out on their little patio space or inside near the shuffleboard.

White Spot

Well, we can’t ever have a burger list without mentioning the classic neighbourhood White Spot. They’ve been doing burgers since the 1920s, and on Tuesdays you can get their famous Legendary Platter for $10 (if you purchase a beverage). The Legendary is their 1/4 pound beef burger, smothered in their signature Triple “O” sauce. Other burger choices on their menu are a wild Pacific sockeye salmon burger, a brie and mushroom veggie burger, a chicken burger, and even a brunch burger. Topping add-ons are endless, just ask. All served with creamy coleslaw and endless fries. Come during their daily happy hours between 2pm and 5pm, and after 8pm, and you’ll get a deal on appies and drinks as well.
