Monday, February 12th is Family Day in BC, a statutory holiday. Here’s our list of events to check out in Kitsilano and farther afield.

In Kitsilano

From 10:30am till 1:30pm, the Kitsilano Community Centre will be hosting a free Family Day fun day with a family playtime gym, bouncy castle, arts and crafts, popcorn, and interactive activities.

Farther Afield

Downtown Vancouver, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the Vancouver Maritime Museum is hosting a free Family Day event. It will feature a presentation of Into the Arctic, and art and film exhibit about Canada’s north by artist Cory Trépanier. Crafts, guided tours, live music, and hot chocolate are included. From 11am till 2pm.

If it’s a rainy day (and it most likely will be), the warm and humid Bloedel Conservatory is a wonderful respite from the weather. And the VanDusen Botanical Garden is lovely for a short or long stroll, rain or shine. Look for the winter-flowering jasmine there. Both gardens are offering 2 for 1 admission today.

Come to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery in Richmond on Family Day and explore the West Coast fishing history with interactive displays and over 55,000 square feet of indoor exhibit space to explore. Admission to Parks Canada places (such as the Cannery) for youth 17 and under is free. And don’t miss the machine demos of the historic canning line, which will be offered throughout the day at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm.

It’s about an hour’s drive to the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove but it’s well worth it. You’ll get to see loads of reptiles, birds, and local wildlife such as elk, bears, and bison, plus exotics like cheetahs, camels, giraffes, hippos, lions, kangaroos, tigers, and monkeys. The zoo has discounted their admission rates by 50% during the week for the whole month of February, and on Family Day it’s reduced by 30%.
