It’s the festive holiday season and winter is soon, if not already weatherwise, approaching, so embrace it and have some fun with these activities in and around Kitsilano.

Sharpen your Blades

The Kitsilano Community Centre Ice Rink is open for ice skating and ice hockey. The winter schedule includes family-time skating and hockey, adults 50 and over skating, skating lessons, and more.  Rentals are available at $3 for skates. Ice time costs just $6 for adults and $3 for kids.

A Toast and Canadian Treat

For a little warm mug of campfire goodness try the S’mores Hot Chocolate from ice cream shop 720 Sweets on West Broadway. It features rich hot chocolate topped with whipped cream, toasted marshmallows, and a caramel and chocolate drizzle, served in a cup rimmed with graham cracker bits.

For a true Canadian winter indulgence, make poutine your dinner tonight from The Oakwood. Served in a hot cast iron skillet, thick-cut fries are smothered in delicious curds of cheese and topped with creamy gravy and sliced maple bacon. Best enjoyed near their cozy fireplace with a friend or two.

Tour and Procession

Go on a special guided tour of the famous ship, the St. Roch, which patrolled the Canadian Arctic during the 1930s and was the first ship to completely circumnavigate North America. This tour, only available on the 3rd Sunday of each month, is at the Vancouver Maritime Museum and offers the opportunity to see a unique part of the ship not normally open to the public – the engine room and the main hold. The tour ticket includes admission to the rest of the museum. The next date is December 17th from 12:30pm till 4:30pm.

The annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival is on Thursday, December 21st, starting at 6pm at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre and it ends at the Water Park on Granville Island. Expect to see a candle labyrinth, family-friendly events at the False Creek Community Centre, a fire finale, and other surprises in between.
