National Doughnut Day is on the first Friday of June of each year and started in 1938 as a fund raiser for Chicago’s The Salvation Army.

Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression and to honor The Salvation Army “Lassies” of World War I who served doughnuts to soldiers.

Celebrate the day by grabbing some fried doughy goodness at one of the many bakeries and coffee shops that sell donuts in and around Kitsilano.

But if you’re looking to step up your doughnut game, two shops deserve a special mention.

Cartems Donuterie

Literally born out of a dream 10 years ago, Jordan Cash envisioned opening an amazing donut shop name ‘Cartems’. While the name doesn’t really mean anything, Cartems’ team is focused on three things: smiles, conversation, and donuts. Cartems uses fresh local ingredients including flour from Anita’s Organic Mill in Chilliwack and meat from Two Rivers. Among their June specials are donuts named Sweet Berry Wine Stuffie, Pink Lemonade, and Strawberry Love.

Lucky’s Doughnuts

A project of 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters, Lucky’s opened in 2012. Inspired by the doughnuts they would sample on the road at coffee shows in the US, co-founders Colter and Vince wanted to open a shop that sold “just coffee and doughnuts.” Their idea was to keep it simple, and just make doughnuts the old fashioned way, no frozen product, nothing trucked in; just simple, delicious doughnuts. Their current menu includes donuts named Cold Brew Cruller, Pistachio Glazed Ring, and Salted Caramel Old Fashioned.
