It’s spring time, and that means it’s time to clear out and, of course, donate some of our unneeded clothing and household items before you take out your warm weather clothing household accessories.

While it can be tempting to simply dump your old clothing, appliances, and other stuff, remember that there are many charities right in our backyards who need for donations.

Here are just a few of the local charities in the neighbourhood who make it easy to donate your lightly used goods to a worthy cause. That way, you make a difference in your community and have an added incentive to declutter and get organized for spring. Win-win!

1. BC SPCA Thrift Store

The following is a list of the items (listed in order of preference) welcomed by BC SPCA Thrift Stores:

  • Housewares
  • china/flatware
  • furniture (tables, chairs, sofas, beds, shelving, desks, lamps)
  • rugs
  • curtains
  • appliances
  • electronic equipment
  • clothing
  • games
  • books

Not all stores take donations of larger items (such as furniture or appliances). Call the store near you to inquire about arrangements for pick-up of large items.

2. The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is looking for your used clothing and household goods for their thrift stores. You can donate directly to the store (there are two locations in Kitsilano) or use their website to locate a drop bin near you.

3. Vancouver Public Library

The Vancouver Public Library welcomes gifts like books, DVDs, CDs and magazines. They should be in good condition and of current interest. Donations can be dropped off at any VPL branch during regular hours, or brought to the Central branch shipping dock. Materials should be marked as gifts for the library.

Vancouver Public Library Kitsilano Branch, 2425 MacDonald St, Vancouver, 604-665-3976, www.vpl.ca

4. Big Brothers

Big Brothers is interested in donations of the following nature: all clothing, accessories, purses, wallets, backpacks and bags, shoes, towels, tablecloths, curtains and linens, undergarments, nylons and socks, blankets, bedding and pillows, housewares (dishes, cutlery, pots), toys, books, games and video games, videos, records, CD’s and DVD’s, small tools and small appliances.
