It’s Christmas day, you’ve just spent half your pay cheque on gifts and you’ve got eighteen mouths to feed at dinner. You need a coffee, but nowhere is open.

So what do you do?

You put on some Lululemon yoga pants, ignore the stares of disgust if you’re a man, then head to Viva Café and Bakery, the only place I know that’s open on December 25th (and even Jan 1st).

Don’t be intimidated by the comically large selection of food: we’ve tried about 80% of it (because we’re greedy buggers) and its all excellent. Their drinks station is small and at busy times you’re in for a bit of a wait, but you’ll get a solid cup of coffee from their super friendly baristas.

It also doesn’t hurt that this café is a stones throw away from Kitsilano beach and dog park.

Vancouver Coffee Snob Recommendation: They have one of the best breakfast sandwiches in the city, so start with that and a large latte. Follow up with a ginger beet juice and a carrot cake chaser. Take all this to the volleyball courts on Kits beach, remove your sleeveless top, flex your abs and then just drink the beet juice because the rest are empty carbs.
