It’s the May Long Weekend this weekend, with the Victoria Day holiday falling on Monday, May 18th. It’s the weekend when summer unofficially kicks off in our neighbourhood as the Kitsilano Pool opens on Saturday. Forget any camping ideas and stick around for some ocean-front swimming and for some great food ideas to try, listed for you below.

4 Must-Try Eats in Kitsilano this Long Weekend

1. Spot Prawns
Tickets are still available for the 9th annual Spot Prawn Festival at False Creek Fishermen’s Wharf. For $17.50 (plus tax and fees) you’ll get a plate of these local and sustainable crustaceans (3 to be exact), plus a selection of side dishes and fresh bread. Or head down to the docks to pick up a pound or more of these lively beauties and cook them up yourself at home as the short but sweet season has begun.

2. Rhubarb Crumble
This tart and delicious celery-like plant is ready to be harvested and made into great pies. Pick yours up from your neighbour’s garden (with permission, of course) or head to a local Farmers Market. Unfortunately our Kitsilano Farmers Market is temporarily located at Riley Park at Ontario and 30th Avenue but come June 14th it should be back at its old location by the Kitsilano Community Centre.

3. Something New
Lucky for us in Kitsilano, new restaurants are always cropping up. For this long weekend give one of these new hot spots a try: AnnaLena (go for the Bison Tartar and the Kale Salad), The Green Moustache (the juices are a must try here, as are their raw desserts), and Miss Me Yet (a funky bar with dreamy Lamb Shank and Corned Beef Hash.

4. Warm Weather Dessert
Yes, it’s been a fickle few weeks in terms of the weather but the sun has been out and it has been hot enough for some cool treats. Try the limited release Raspberry Mint Sorbet from (appropriately named) Rain or Shine Ice Cream and…enjoy the long weekend!
