One of our favourite spots for lunch in the neighbourhood, as well as a good old-fashioned butcher shop, Jackson’s Meat & Deli is a Kitsilano staple that’s been around for a long time and has no plans on ever leaving. Here are five things you didn’t know about this Kits gem.

1) History lesson

Jackson’s Meat and Deli, located at 2214 West 4th Ave., has resided at this location since 1911. The current owner, Chris Jackson, is the sixth generation of Jackson butchers, and he runs the shop with his wife, Shayna.

2) Local meet-ups

When Chris’ father was a kid, in the 1950s, the farmers would bring their animals right up the alley to the back door of this West 4th shop. While this certainly doesn’t happen anymore, about 90% of the store is still locally sourced from within BC.

3) Celebrity clients

Jackson’s caters! They do everything from cocktail parties to weddings to corporate functions. They have even catered for Adele, Beck, and the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson. (In other celebrity news, Chris has also sold Christie Brinkley a hot dog.)

4) Homemade comfort food

All of the recipes for Jackson’s hams, sausages, and the like have been the same for over a hundred years now. The homemade treats, such as the chili and meatloaf, are made by Shayna.

5) In this order

Chris is most proud of the beef (all raised in BC and BC-fed), while Shayna says her go-to lunch is the Italian sandwich. Our favourite? The meatloaf. Smothered in homemade BBQ sauce, it’s to die for.
