Sometimes you just need a little curry to get you through the day.

Lucky for us in Kitsilano, there’s no shortage of good Indian restaurants.

Here’s our top 5 list of the best Indian restaurants in Kits. And although we love East is East and they do serve Indian dishes, for simplicity this list is restricted to just Indian-only cuisine.

1. Akbar’s Own

The high quality ingredients used at this long established Indian restaurant stand out, as does the presentation, and the service is always good. The interior of the restaurant is rather stark but it doesn’t matter. To try: start with their unique cone-shaped pappadums which come with excellent chutneys for dipping, then go for the Malai Kofta, Akbar’s Mixed Grill, and of course, the classic Butter Chicken. Don’t forget to add the rice and naan. Akbar’s dine-in lunch specials are a good bet too.

2. Indian Oven

This well-known West 4th spot is an easy choice for nice, warm weather days that will come soon enough. Why? Because they have a roof-top patio and value-deals like $14 pitchers of beer! Other specials include Butter Chicken with rice and naan (fresh from their clay oven) for $18. Family-friendly atmosphere too.

3. Ginger Garden [closed]

Newly opened last summer, the Ginger Garden has a well-decorated interior with crisp white linens and pleasant service. Portions are generous and their menu is quite extensive. Come here for their weekly lunch specials which are around $10.

4. Tandoori Fusion

Also fairly new, having opened in 2013, Tandoori Fusion has quickly become a lunch or take-out hotspot in Kitsilano. Portions are big and main entrees include rice or naan (most places charge extra for those). Lunch specials are $10 and are until 3:30pm.

5. Atithi [closed]

Popular with lunch-goers looking for a tasty bargain, cozy little Atithi with it’s home-cooked flavour has a very affordable lunch buffet option for under $10. There’s also a $9 take-out/delivery menu. Try their Jackfruit Pakoras. Also, Atithi is currently part of the Dine Out Vancouver event.
