With the highly anticipated Au Comptoir restaurant & cafe opening up this weekend (in the old Take Five Cafe space across from Whole Foods on West 4th Avenue), Kitsilano is adding another French dining spot to its list. Before we go and try this new Parisian brasserie, let’s review 4 great French restaurants & cafes in Kitsilano right now.

4 Great French Restaurants & Cafes in Kitsilano

1. Bistro Pastis
Familiar and charming Bistro Pastis on West 4th Avenue serves classic French fare such as French Onion Soup, Duck Confit, and Le Steak et Les Frites in a cozy, intimate setting. With a crackling fireplace, crisp white linens, and an extensive wine list, it’s a perfect option for date night (or date brunch on the weekend).

2. La Cigale French Bistro
Rustic wooden tables, a blackboard menu featuring sophisticated but comforting southern French flavours, and “No Corkage Fee Tuesdays” for the BYOB option all add up to be yet another wonderful little French bistro on West 4th Avenue. Formerly the Bistrot Bistro, the newly named La Cigale French Bistro fills up fast for dinner. Try the $32 Prix Fixe Menu, or for dessert, the seasonal Chanterelle Mushroom Tart.

3. Plaisir Sucre
Of course we must mention this friendly Parisian cafe. With freshly baked breads, pastries, cakes, and light lunch options, plus a kid’s play area and a welcoming French owner/baker, what’s not to love about Plaisir Sucre? Practice your French-speaking skills here and take home some almond croissants for a decadent breakfast treat.

4. Linh Cafe
Technically a Vietnamese restaurant, the newly opened Linh Cafe has an interesting menu of traditional French and modern Vietnamese cooking (not surprising, given Vietnam’s history as a former French colony). Brunch and lunch options include Cassoulet, Hanoi-style Pho, and Banh Mi Spicy Baguette Sticks, but also freshly baked croissants, palmiers, and other goodies like Pate Chaud – a savoury puff pastry, popular on the streets in Vietnam.

Bon appétit!
