The official public school year has started in Kitsilano (even with no-one actually attending school due to the continuing BC teacher’s strike). With that, a host of fun and educational classes are available starting this week for kids of all ages.

We’ve compiled a list here that is mostly aimed towards preschoolers or younger, though there are some options for older kids that may have some “free” time on their hands right now. Check the accompanying website links for further choices.

5 Fun and Educational Classes for Kids in Vancouver

1. Art
Bring out the budding Botero at the Arts Umbrella on Granville Island with the Parent & Me Visual Arts program for 2-3 year olds. These classes encourage little ones to explore and experiment with all kinds of materials such as clay, paper, watercolours, oils, and chalk pastels. Classes start in mid-September with some spots still available, registration and fee payment is required.

2. Cooking
Offered at both the neighbouring West Point Grey and Dunbar Community centres, the Little Chefs cooking and baking classes are designed for 3-5 year olds who love to help out in the kitchen. They’ll learn to make a delicious snack each week, plus the basic skills such as safety and measurements are taught as well. In addition, crafts include a personalized recipe book, place mat and a surprise craft. Classes begin next week, registration and fee payment is required, though drop-in classes may be available when space permits.

3. Dance
Have an early performer on your hands? Encourage his or her moves by checking out the Tiny Twirlers Creative Dance classes (for 3-4 year olds) at the Westside Dance Centre and the Early Stages Performing Arts classes (for 4-6 year olds) at StageCoach Canada, both in Kitsilano. The former incorporates various dance elements with songs, movements, dances, props, and games as part of the lesson, while the latter is focused on the three musical theatre components of singing, dancing, and drama.

4. Language
Have your kids learn sign language (for babies 0-18 months), French (for 3-5 and 6-10 year olds), or even Japanese (for 3-6 year olds) this fall at the Kitsilano Community Centre. You may even pick up something yourself! Classes are starting next week and do require registration and a fee payment.

5. Music
There are many choices for music classes in Kitsilano, but two of the best are Music with Marnie and West Side Music Together, both offered at the Kitsilano Community Centre and other locations in our area. Both are parent-participation classes that are guaranteed to be fun for you and your little one aged 0 to 7. Expect to learn memorable songs, take home music CDs (great for long car rides), and meet new friends.
