Searching for the coolest patio in Vancouver this summer? Try the 800-block of Robson. The space directly behind the Vancouver Art Gallery will be closed to vehicle traffic and transformed into an awesome “urban reef” from Canada Day (July 1) through Labour Day (September 1). The installation, which uses marine-grade plywood to construct curvy benches and tables that resemble a coral reef, doubles as a super-cool-patio-lounge-public-space.

The design was created by Kaz Bemner, Jeremiah Deutscher, Michael Siy and Kenneth Navarra – a team of Vancouver architects, designers and carpenters. They beat out 78 other entries from all over the world as part of the Robson Redux contest. Their set up, which uses locally-sourced inputs, is designed to get you to stop, hang out, chat with someone new, and generally kick back during the mellow summer months.

Seating is strategically positioned to maximize sunbathing. Tables and ledges are there to help you take advantage of Vancouver’s population of tempting downtown food trucks. Throughout the summer, the benches will also serve as seating for outdoor concerts. Internal LED lighting means the space is still welcoming in the wee hours of the night.

For the past three years, the 800-block of Robson has transformed throughout the summer months to encourage people to slow down, pause, and connect with each other in an inviting urban setting. Previous installations include a collection of giant beanbags and a comparatively boring patio umbrella cedar table set up.

Kick back. Have a picnic. Cuddle a date. Meet friends. Play hide and seek. Find Nemo. In our very own urban coral reef which doubles as Vancouver’s best summer patio.

Stupid place to put that in the middle of the road. It should be on the other side the art gallery on the plaza.
