The new year will bring about new resolutions for many of us. Top resolutions year after year for Canadians include: lose weight, save more money, exercise more, quit smoking, quit drinking and learning something new.

I confess to having made a few of these resolutions more than once myself. Last year I resolved to eat less meat and discovered some of the vegetarian restaurants in our neighbourhood in the process. If you are a vegan or vegetarian – or, like me, just trying to eat less meat – there is no better place than Kits.

Check out some of Kitsilano’s best vegan and vegetarian restaurants below.

1. Golden Aura Organic Eatery | 2680 West Broadway, 604-738-2872

This vegan and raw food restaurant opened in the spring of 2013. They have soups, salads, breakfast items and excellent juices and smoothies.

2. Indigo Raw Food Cafe | 2589 West 16th Ave, 604-537-7288

The menu is vegan and mostly raw. I love the buckwheat crepes and the homemade cherry perogies.

3. Dharma Kitchen | 3667 West Broadway, 604-738-3899

This is a self-declared Buddhist vegan food restaurant. The restaurant is quiet with excellent burgers, rice bowls, and more.

4. Heirloom Vegetarian Restaurant | 1509 West 12th Ave, 604-733-2231

This is a modern vegetarian restaurant with vegan options and a liquor license. While it is not technically in Kits, I still consider it part of my neighbourhood. It is a bit pricier and trendier than the others, but a welcomed change from the usual hippie vibe of most vegetarian restaurants. Recently nominated for Canada’s best new restaurants in 2013. The menu is truly innovative and perfect for the veg foodie.

5. Planet Veg | 1941 Cornwall Ave, 604-734-1001

Healthy Indian inspired, fast food style veggie restaurant. Great for take out.

6. Sejuiced | 1958 West 4th Ave, 604-730-9906

Open daily 9am-8pm, Sun and Mon until 6pm only. Super casual veggie restaurant offering a large variety of fresh juices, organic salads, soups, rice bowls and veggie burgers. Healthy, hearty vegetarian food that is a good take out option. Great juice bar too!

7. Tera V Burger | 2961 West Broadway, 604-336-3575

Think McDonalds meets the Naan. Tera V offers veggie burgers, wraps, sandwiches, salads, and smoothies. Every item except for the garden burger is available as vegan. Small menu but pretty good food quality at a good price. Great as take out.

8. The Naam | 2724 West 4th Ave, 604-738-7151

Last but not least, Vancouver’s pioneer vegetarian restaurant is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Some people love the Naam, which opened in Kits hippie days some 30 years ago, and others could do without. Personally, I really love it! Warm atmosphere, good food with hearty portions and super affordable. Be prepared to wait in line during peak hours.

Of course, there are several other restaurants in Kits that are great options for vegetarians while still serving meat. Veggies should also consider Nuba, Aphrodite’s Organic Café, East is East, Harvest Deli, the Eatery, BiBo and many, many others.
