The August Jack Brings Tapas and Craft Beer to Kits

Room 18 at 2042 West 4th Avenue closed suddenly earlier this year. For those who missed it, the lounge has been replaced with The August Jack, an adult only tapas, craft beer and cocktail kind of place.

The August Jack opened July 19 and is named after Squamish Chief August Jack Khatsahlano, who is also the namesake for Kits. The space still bears resemblance to Room 18, but it is definitely cleaner and more inviting. We tried their truffle popcorn at the Khatsahlano festival a few weeks ago (it was amazing!), but I am also interested in trying their squash, cashew and gorgonzola perigees soon.

Kits readers–any comments on this place? So far, from Yelp we’ve learned:

“The beer menu is relatively extensive, but not by nerdy craft beer standards. The food and beer pairing is where the menu fell short.   None of the pairings enhanced or complimented any of the plates. The staff still seem to be working on the food and beer combinations as the pairings in the print menu did not match the servers recommendations. In time I am sure they will work this out.”

“Loved it. Really nice to have a place with a craft beer only selection both on tap and in the bottle. Really enjoyed the foods as well.  The mussels are awesome!  The place is bright and lively and the staff were knowledgable about the beer and the food.  Nice place for a quick beer but also a place to bring a date too.”

“Great new spot in Kits!! The restaurant used to be room eighteen but with the new reno the ambiance has natural fixtures with a modern bright feel. Staff where very accommodating, friendly and knowledgable. Food was amazing especially the perogies and quiche stuffed tomatoes!! I’ll definably be back :).”

Just wondering why you say that it is an ‘adult only’ place?
When I was there, there was a child in a stroller.
The food may be good but I recommend eating before or after you go there. The portions are very small. There are comments online that agree.

Hey Lynn. I have walked by a few times at night and it had a “bar” vibe, so I thought of it more as a lounge than a restaurant. Do you think it is a good place to go with children?

  3. Lynn says:

No, I wouldn’t necessarily say that it was good or bad for children but I just wondered why you had written adults only.
When I went there, it was quiet and didn’t have a ‘bar’ vibe at all.

I was super excited to see August Jack open up – as much as we liked Room 18, its great to have a new tapas/wine/craft beer bars in Kits. My husband and I stopped by last week for a late dinner – we shared a bottle of wine and had the charcuterie plate, a seared albacore tuna dish (there are more items on the menu than shown here), and the micro green salad. Everything we tried was amazing – the charcuterie plate is probably the best we’ve had in the neighbourhood (especially the duck pâté!) – it had such a substantial assortment of items that we required an extra plate of bread to finish it!

The individual plates are small, yes, but that’s the point of tapas – it lets you sample a number of dishes which add up to a full meal. That said, there are also a few larger, entree sized dishes on the menu if that’s what you prefer. Good dessert list too, although we didn’t try it this time.

Great food, friendly staff, and a fun atmosphere – we are already looking forward to our next visit!
