It’s been a busy news cycle for Kitsilano pets. Unfortunately, none of the stories contain good news.

Someone broke into Tan Lee and Joanna Makowska’s Kitsilano apartment May 29. After taking the electronics and ransacking the place, they killed one of two pet lionhead rabbits. The other rabbit is missing. Lee and Makowska are searching for Milo the white lionhead rabbit. They’re offering a reward for information. Call 604-715-0714 if you can help. In an ideal world, he’d turn up in rabbit funland in Jericho Beach and get reunited with his adoring owners.

Meanwhile, the owner of the German Shepherd Captain, who was left for dead in a Kitsilano dumpster last summer to the outrage of local animal rights activists, was in court for a sentencing hearing.

Brian Whitlock’s official story is that he believed Captain had been poisoned. According to The Globe & Mail, “He claims he struck the dog with a baseball bat three times, aiming to break its neck, and put it in the dumpster after he believed it was dead.” Crown lawyer Jordan Hauschildt recommended a sentence of four to six months in jail less time served, three years’ probation and a lifetime ban on possessing animals.

Mr. Whitlock’s lawyers, on the other hand, recommended a non-custodial sentence and three years’ probation, noting the 26-year-old had mental health issues. The matter will return to court June 11.
