Just Dance Inspires a Diverse Crowd to Shake Its Thing in Kitsilano

Just DanceI love to dance. What I love even more is being able to walk to and from the dance hall in mere minutes. Add a diverse crowd ranging from younger kids to older adults, former hippies, office people and more to the mix and boom… That’s Just Dance. It  happens three Fridays a month at the Russian Community Centre just on the corner of West 4th Avenue and Arbutus Street. And I love it!

Just Dance is a positive party community event that was founded in 1993 by resident DJ Abheeru. He had recently moved from Quebec City and wanted to to create an innovative and positive dance event with music from around the world in a smoke-free (unique in the days of smoky clubs) and alcohol-free environment. He also wanted Just Dance to be a nonprofit event that would donate all its proceeds to local charities and be driven by volunteers.

Each Friday has a different theme: Journeys, Ethnicity and Fusion. All of the dance nights start off with an optional moving meditation at 7:30pm with the dance portion of the evening kicking off at 9pm. Just Dance also has a Chai Cafe offering home-made chai, filtered water and delicious bliss balls.

Next time you’re looking for some dancing fun with or without the family, look no further: Just Dance is the place to enjoy global beats and home-made treats with the people in your neighbourhood!

Just Dance happens three Fridays a month at 2114 West 4th Avenue. Admission ranges between $10-15, event and age dependent. For more information, contact info@justdance.ca or 604-716-9599.

Julie moved to Vancouver in 2006 from Europe and settled in Kits in 2009 with her partner. She loves the easy ocean-access, beautiful heritage houses and funky local events and shops that Kits has to offer. You will often find her wandering around and talking to people which is how she finds out about the goings on in our neighbourhood. Julie currently works at a local non-profit community organization. In her spare time she enjoys dining out, thrift shopping, yoga and random adventures.
