UBC Botanical Garden’s Apple Festival – a family-friendly fall favourite – is coming up this weekend, Oct. 13-14. At the annual event, the garden sells 44,000 lbs. (20,000 kilos) of apples, in over 70 varieties, in only two days. The fun lasts from 11am-4pm Saturday and Sunday. Entry is $4 for everyone over 12 years of age. Small kiddos get free entry.

What goes down at apple fest? Lots of cider and pie. Apple dishes are available at the irresistible food fair. Meanwhile, next door, the tasting tent is an additional $5, which is worth it, considering visitors can taste 60 varieties of new and heritage apples grown in British Columbia.

But there’s more to apple fest than eating and shopping. Activities include apple education for kids, storytelling, face painting, a Longest Apple Peel contest, demonstrations of grafting and cider-pressing, and a naming ceremony for Canada’s newest apple, currently called the SPA493 apple. If you’ve got an unidentified apple tree growing near your place, this is your chance to bring in apples and try to stump the experts.

All proceeds from Apple Fest support the educational, research and community programs in the Garden. Bike Valet will be available at the main entrance and there is a free shuttle bus from the UBC Campus West Parkade.
