It is Father’s Day on Sunday, June 17, and if you can’t bear to buy another tie, tool or gadget that will never be used, we might be able to help. Here are five affordable options right here in our neighbourhood.

5 GIFT IDEAS FOR FATHER’S DAY

1. Meat.

There is something about men and high quality meat that makes them giddy. Kitsilano is the ideal neighbourhood for disconcerting carnivores with The Honest Butcher (3209 West Broadway), Pete’s Meat (2817 Arbutus St.) who carries ManCakes cupcakes), Jackson’s (2214 West 4th Ave.) and the Market Meats ( 2326 West 4th Ave.) offering plenty of options for the grill.

2. Craft beer.

Did dad take in Craft Beer Week and develop a new favourite? Regardless, Darby’s (2001 Macdonald St.) has a surprisingly good selection and their staff will help find just the right brew for dad.

3. A trip to the driving range.

We often comment on the fact we should take better advantage of our close proximity to Pacific Spirit Park. In minutes you can be in this majestic natural environment that is also home to the UBC Golf Course. Send dad to the course for an hour to breathe in the amazing forest air and wack at a bucket of balls for only $5.50 (60 balls).

4. Patio lunch.

Check out one of the many patios in the neighbourhood serving up dad friendly fare. Brisket-topped poutine at Oakwood Canadian Bistro, oysters at Chewies Steam & Oyster Bar (2201 West 1st Ave.) , or grab a burger from Vera’s (1935 Cornwall Ave.) and hit the beach.

5. A selection of dad’s favourite edibles from the ‘hood.

This is the option we are going with. You know what they say – the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach! Our list includes: Cashew stuffed olives from Dunderave Olive Company (Kitsilano Farmers Market), fresh butter croissants (Plasir Sucre, 2668 Arbutus St.), a bag of organic French roast (49th Parallel, 2152 West 4th Ave.) and buffalo mozzarella (Les Amis Du Fromage, 1752 West 2nd Ave).
