Vancouver has a tumultuous relationship with the Stanley Cup. After the Canucks lost Game 7 to the New York Rangers in 1994, somewhere between 50,000 and 70,000 emotional fans swarmed downtown Van between Robson and Thurlow. They got rowdy. The police used tear gas. There were serious injuries and costly property damage.

How does this affect hockey fans this year? The Ministry of Public Safety decided fans behaved badly when celebrating the Canucks’ Game 5 victory on Friday, so they closed downtown liquor stores at 4:00 PM on Monday before Game 6. But there was no action in the streets. Fans were sad. Let’s see what happens tomorrow.

Meanwhile here are some images from the 1994 Stanley Cup riot.
