Kits elementary gets unexpected help from world-renowned artist

For the past few years General Gordon Elementary, that little brick school on West 6th, has struggled to peg together funds for basics like art/music supplies, athletics programs and playground equipment. The school celebrates its 100th anniversary on June 17, and principal Margaret Davidson has worked with parents to organize a 100-year-anniversary fundraising auction to help meet the school’s needs.

Usually PAC auctions consist of stuff donated by parents. But this year, an unassuming man wandered into Davidson’s office and asked if he could photograph the schoolyard. The man was Jeff Wall, an artist whose work has been exhibited in London’s Tate Gallery and MoMA.

Wall went on to photograph the school in honor of the 100-year anniversary and the photographs are for sale at the auction. Given that Wall donated a photograph to the Vancouver Art Gallery that sold for over $300,000, General Gordon Elementary might be in for a big boost. Read more in the Vancouver Sun.
