Kitsilano Beach Park Playground opening this weekend

3029

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation invites you to join them to celebrate the opening of the city’s largest accessible playground at Kitsilano Beach Park.

The inclusive and somewhat controversial playground, which is a 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games legacy, enables children of all abilities to play side-by-side with their siblings, friends, families and caregivers. Features include wheelchair accessible surfaces, rotation climber and saucer swings.

The opening is at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 11th.  Refreshments and Entertainment will take place in front of The Boathouse Concession as part of the proceedings.

Checked it out this AM. Lame. Kids will quickly tire of it. And oddly dangerous too. lots of hard surfaces, sharp edges, and opportunities for kids to fall onto badly positioned rocks.

Evidently designed and built by adults with unresolved anger at children….

Looks great. Too bad the opening was in December. Lots of great memories for parents and kids of all abilities to be had here

  3. TJ says:

I’ve got to agree with NC. My toddler loved exploring it, but as far as I can see there’s only room for about 1/3 of the kids of the other structure could handle, and stranger still that they put a sand area up some stairs with a one foot drop. Not great for the little ones.

NC and TJ – nothing like a positive outlook, is there? Or a ‘wait and see… it might actually be great’. Not everyone likes change, do they?

    Keep smiling though, eh.

$540,000!! What did we get for that?? A couple of swings, an odd sandbox with big rocks buried, and a a couple other pieces of equipment. From what I can tell, most of the money went into useless landscaping, lots of concrete, and likely a whole lot of “consulting fees!”

A shocking use of tax payer money in a time when area schools are removing playground equipment for lack of money. The effort at Kits Beach is a big disappointment for parents and kids in the neighbourhood, and an examples of the worst insufficiencies and waste of our semi-functional and fractured local government.

Oh, and it’s pretty, with swoopy lines and artfully placed driftwood and boulders.

The drawing accompanying this report is of a pretty neat playground that contains far more than what was actually delivered. Wasn’t this the depiction of the park used to sell it to the public? The $500K playground!

Just another example of the poor practices and bait and switch by the Parks Board!?
