City Council delays McBride Park unification

mcbrideparkNPA Councillor Suzanne Anton reignited the decades-old debate about whether to unite the two halves of Kitsilano’s McBride Park at a council meeting on November 5th.

At that meeting, council voted in favour of a motion by Anton to delay curb and pavement work on Waterloo Street that sits between the two portions of the park until council reassesses the issue through the Greenest City Action Plan, which envisions creating more greenspace in Vancouver.

McBride Park is bounded by West 4th and 5th avenues and Blenheim and Collingwood Streets, however is bisected by Waterloo Street. Since the early 1970s, several controversial attempts have been made to close the street permanently and unite the two parts.

Paving was expected to start this fall at a cost of $125,000 but Anton’s move will prevent it from being resolved until after the Olympics.

What does everyone think should happen to the two halves of McBride Park?

There’s always resistance to ‘breaking up the grid’, from Fire & Police and especially the City Engineering Dept.

Personally I think the road should go and we should have a larger park.

Absolutely combine the two. It will be safer for kids and I see no need for the road to stay open there.
