Sullivan’s Eco-Density plans come to life with Laneway Housing

lanewayhousingHomeowners in Kitsilano can start converting their laneway garages into rental housing under a new bylaw passed unanimously by Vancouver city council last month.

About 70,000 single-family lots across Vancouver are eligible to add the new homes, which can only be built in the area usually reserved for a garage, and only used as rental units.

The Laneway housing initiative was proposed by former mayor Sam Sullivan as part of his eco-density initiative and current Mayor Gregor Robertson will usher in the project in hopes of offering more affordable housing for those who work in the city.

The city is accepting applications now and a permit will cost $899. Check out some of the examples of what homeowners are allowed to do here.
