Big City Cupcakes come to Kits

bccCupcakes are surprisingly big business and Kelowna’s Big City Cupcakes has Vancouver’s Original Cupcakes in their sights and their West 4th location is now open.

Heather & Lori’s Original Cupcakes were the first mover in the local cupcake market when they set up shop on Denman Street in 2002. Since then there has been plenty of imitators come and go while Original Cupcakes has expanded to five locations around the city including one at 2887 West Broadway.

The upstart Big City Cupcakes has founded by 3 business women in November 2008 and their aggressive 2-year business plan is built around a franchise model with North American aspirations. They’re on their way with thirteen franchises sold to date.

Big City Cupcakes is located next to the re-born Jackson Meats location on West 4th between Yew and Vine.

Their Red Velvet cupcake is quite good, with some very sticky sweet frosting on top 🙂

um, not that great for being more expensive than the original cupcakes, on top of totally copying them…nothing to write home about.

Cupcakes have been a little overdone and are old. The Thomas Haas Patisserie opening on W. Broadway should hopefully prove more exciting.

Really terrible design, and the product is sooo greasy. It really doesn’t seem to be made with much thought or care. At least the original Cupcakes store has nice design, even though their cupcakes aren’t the greatest either!

Tried the Flavour of the month at their West 10th location this afternoon and I was totally disappointed. The icing was too sweet and gritty, the cup cake was dry and bland. The icing reminded me of the kind that came out of a tube and the cake was similar to what you would get out of a box. Not worth the $3.10 I paid for it. Will never go back there again.
