Las Margaritas – It’s the chips & salsa

2102

You can measure a Mexican restaurant by the quality of the chips and salsa, and the ones at Las margaritas are fantastic! Located in the heart of Kitsilano, at 1999 West 4th Avenue, Las Margaritas feels like a small family restaurant with home cooking.

A number of dishes on the menu stand out, such as a variety of Nachos appetizers (with the same delicious chips), the Fajitas (chicken, beef, shrimp or vegetarian), and the Chiles Relleno. But one of the most noticeable dishes is the Enchilada de Sonora (ask for extra chiles). The average price of a dish is around $14.50.

No Mexican restaurant is complete without a margarita, and one can choose between a range of margaritas on the rocks or frozen with different fruit flavours. And if you prefer, they also serve a tasty virgin version, so you can still get something done after a working lunch.

While the service is usually great, be prepared to wait in line though, as it can get quite busy in the evenings. There is a waiting/bar area that fills up and often crowds over onto the streets, and drinks can be ordered
while you wait.  Avoid the rush by going for lunch instead, open starting at 11:30am daily. Reservations are possible from Monday to Thursday: 604-734-7177.

Haven’t gotten enough of the chips and salsa? They are available to go, so you can satisfy that late night craving.

Also the chipotle sauce. Long-simmered, complex, and savory (my mouth waters as I write). Las Margaritas has won ‘best Mexican restaurant’ in various city-wide polls for many years in a row, and has totally earned it. Visitors who haven’t expected anything much to praise about Mexican cuisine this far north have been pleasantly surprised. There are lots of cultural experts in that kitchen.

  2. This place is great, I love hanging out here especially in the summer. Great place to people watch.

    Their Steak Fajita Burrito rocks!

Unfortunately, while the food is generally good (despite their filthy kitchen), the service here is some of the worst in the City…

I am still puzzled by Las Margaritas. The first few times, I got good food, good service. Then I got sort of good food and bad service. Finally, the last time I got crappy food and awful service. But people seem to keep loving it. I might as well go again and see what the fuzz is all about. Maybe they’ve changed?

    Not a fan.

The food is ok, but the service is very slow, and honestly, the place is overpriced. The only reason it is so popular is the lack of Mexican restaurants in Vancouver.

Las Margaritas is not great nor authentic. I know authentic Mexican and this does not come close. Vancouver’s weak spot is Mexican restaurants, so most Vancouverites are easy to please because of their lack of experience in trying this type of cuisine. That can be a good thing, as your expectations are lower. For me, this falls well below my expectations. Great place to people watch though!
