Molson celebrates 50 Years in Kitsilano

Molson Brass is in town this week to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Molson’s landmark Burrard Street brewery. The three-hectare facility near Burrard Bridge opened in 1953 as Sick’s Capilano Brewery, but Molson acquired it in the fall of 1958 when it bought all six Western Canadian breweries operated by Sick’s.

Molson recently completed a $32-million upgrade of its Vancouver brewery, installing seven new fermentation tanks and a bottling line from the company’s Edmonton brewery, which closed last year. The renovation increased the plant’s production capacity by more than 40 per cent to 2.1 million hectolitres a year, or about 600 million bottles.

The renovations allowed for 22 part-time jobs to become full-time positions and the brewery now employs 214 people along with a sales staff of 44.
