Nima’ma in the Black Swan

Ever since Macfourth broke the news back in February that a maternity store would be occupying one of the retail spaces in the Black Swan building, my wife has been anxiously awaiting its opening. While Kitsilano already has two maternity stores on West 4th – Motherhood and Thyme Maternity – these are pretty much the Footlockers and Reitmans of maternity wear.

Nima’ma – “my mother” in Woodland Cree – is certainly not that. It is a beautiful store that carries both locally and internationally designed maternity wear, as well as some organic non-maternity wear clothes, Canadian designed jewelry and accessories, and a range of organic skin care products. Their focus is on providing beautiful, well-fitting maternity clothing, and do so with care and passion. My wife went in last week, and although she wasn’t really looking to buy anything as she is getting towards the end of our twin pregnancy, she walked out with two items because, and I quote here, “these clothes make me feel good and comfortable, and don’t suck all the joy out of looking pregnant like most cookie-cutter maternity clothes.”

Nima’ma Maternity strives to empower mothers by celebrating maternal femininity through quality design and community support. Collaborating with various designers and maternity-related entrepreneurs in Vancouver, Nima’ma looks forward to providing special events with Cherish Childbirth Care each month to offer educational seminars and a private shopping ‘party’ experience.

The Cherish Childbirth Care site has the first event – a free breastfeeding and nutrition workshop – listed for May 5th.
