Kitsilano Seconday School on the art map

Shadbolt_1 Kitsilano’s 100th birthday is being marked by a couple National news outlets (Globe & Mail and the CBC) thanks to psuedo-discovery of a couple Jack Shabolt murals dating back to the 1930s in Kitsilano Seconday School.

Thelma Goudron, 82, knows that at a Vancouver school, buried under 70 years of renovations and layers of institutional yellow paint are two murals by a world-renowned Canadian artist. Kitsilano Secondary School lore held that the works by Jack Shadbolt were painted on walls somewhere on the premises, but no one remembered where. However, last week, while working on a local history project, Mrs. Goudron saw five photos dusted off from the school’s archives showing Mr. Shadbolt, who taught art at the school, directing the students in a mural project in the 1930s.

We can thank the 4th Avenue Business Improvement Association for uncovering them gems through their Kitsilano Memories Project – be sure to check out their exhibit down at Kits Beach today!
