The Annual Khatsalano Music Festival is kicking it up a notch this year. I started to take more notice of this event when I heard that the West 4th BIA had turned to festival production powerhouse Brand.Live to produce this years Khatsalano Festival. Brand.Live is the team behind the growing Live at Squamish festival as well countless other community and music focused events under their well-managed belts.
Unfortunately I have no inside scoop to share with you on artists committed to this event, but I have a sneaking suspicion the line up will be some well known headliners sure to draw the Kits kids and outlying communities.
If you are as curious as I am, join the West 4th BIA and Zulu Records when they host the launch party for the Khatsalano Music Festival this Wednesday, May 16t at Zulu records. There will be live performances and the line up for the July 21 festival will be announced.
Schedule of the May 16 Launch Party
6:30PM – Doors open
7:40PM – Announcement of bands performing at Khatsahlano!
Can’t make it to Zulu but want to get hear about the line up first? Follow along on Twitter using hashtag #Khatsalano

Videomatica, former Kits video store of 29 years, donated the lion’s share of its collection to local universities UBC and SFU.

The total collection includes rare features, literary adaptations, cult/art films, foreign films from more than 75 countries and Vancouver International Film Festival selections.

Perhaps you’re one of those clever shoppers who starts ticking off friends and family from the gift list in November. But if you’re like me, you’re scrambling the last weekend before Christmas and congratulating yourself because it’s not like you waited until Dec. 23. Kitsilano happens to have one of the finest boutique line-ups in town, whether you’re a yoga mum/dad, a tech geek or a UBC student with a Destroyer fetish.
Here’s my list of five ways to make someone happy when shopping in Kits:
1) Skoah Holiday Travel Kit, $25
Skoah’s been skooling Vancouverites on skin workouts since 2001. Now this locally-based line of spatiques is a North American favourite. Their basic philosophy is: Skin, like your booty, needs regular training to be healthy and look great. They assure you this is not an indulgence, but a duty, and both genders seem to appreciate the results. Scoop up a Skoah Holiday Travel Kit (they’ve got one for each skin type) which comes with five travel-sized skin savers: kleasning lotion, tonik, face skrub, hydradew mask and face skotion. Then glow your way through the holiday season. 2258 W. 4th Ave., 604-609-0200, Skoah.com read more »

Kitsilano institution of cool Zulu Records turns 30 Friday, Dec. 16. While this span of time for a human is no big thing, for a retail spot on West 4th, it’s a massive milestone. But Zulu hasn’t just sat quietly hocking its wares; the record store has been an active community presence since 1981 when they opened doors at their old location at 1869 West 4th. They’ve organized community shows, hosted so many free in-store gigs and supported local Vancouver talent.
Drop by Friday between 10:30 am to 8:00 pm. Have a slice of cake. Spin a tune. Get 30% off everything. And find out what Zulu’s got planned for the new year.

Craig Takeuchi for the Georgia Straight put it best when he said: “Believe it or not, there is life after Netflix.”
Kitsilano.ca and other local media reported on the 29-year-old store’s closing this May. But as it turns out, Videomatica co-owner Graham X Peat found a way to survive. Although the rental end of the business is over, Peat will be moving Videomatica sales across the street to fellow indie store Zulu Records (1976 West 4th Avenue). read more »

Edible Flours (West Broadway between Vine and Yew) won the Best Vegan Bakery title from the The Georgia Straight’s Best of Vancouver awards, which are voted on by over 10,000 readers. Here’s what they had to say about it:
“Finally, Vancouver vegans no longer have to be content with lusting after Portland’s Sweet Pea Baking Company and Seattle’s Flying Apron. In April, the city’s first all-vegan retail bakery opened on the West Side. Paul Briggs and Alli Neville’s Edible Flours serves up dairy and egg free cookies, cupcakes, loaves and muffins. The blueberry-nutmeg muffins and chocolate chip cookie sandwiches are particularly delicious”

OTHER KITS WINNERS:
- Zulu Records (1972 West 4th Ave.) received first place in Best Independent Music Store.
- Toybox (3002 West Broadway) tied for third in the category Best Toy Store.
- Terra Breads ( 2380 West 4th Ave.) won Best Small Pleasure.
- Urban Wasp (1535 West 4th Ave.) won Best Scooter Dealer

Zulu Records is taking part in the third year of Olio Festival, which showcases 30+ acts of local and international talent in genres including music, skate film, comedy and art. Zulu will host three live bands on Saturday evening, September 24, as a part of Olio’s new All Ages Record Store Concert Series—events free to the public hosted by Vancouver’s premiere independent record stores.
The bands start with Tassels at 3:00 pm followed by Fine Mist at 5:00 pm. A description of Fine Mist follows. RSVP for the event here.
FINE MIST
Having played together in a slew of previous bands, Fine Mist is the latest project from Vancouver’s Megan McDonald and Jay Arner. Combining lovelorn lyrics with soaring melodies and synth-spiked electro pop, Exclaim rightfully called the duo’s LP, Public Domain, a “fantastic debut.”

Jon and Roy
Khatsalano!, the revamped Kits street festival which I’m sure you know takes place tomorrow, from 11am-6pm, has 23 rocking bands on five stages. Zulu Records curated the music selection this year, giving the line up a very homey, punk, DIY feel.
I’m sure every band on the list is worth its own dance party. But I like a good cheat sheet. So I called Zulu and asked which bands are must-see. Then I became even more demanding and requested that Nic Bragg, the Zulu GM, describe each band with ONLY three words. He stepped up to the challenge admirably. Nic’s answers/our Khatsalano! band cheat sheet is below. Since these guys all go on stage around the same time, I hope his answers aid you in making informed decisions.
KHATSAHLANO! Band Cheat Sheet by Zulu
Jon and Roy: Acoustic, mellow jams. | Peak Main Stage at 5:00pm
Yukon Blonde: Righteous, raucous rock. | City TV/Omni Main Stage at 5:00 pm
The Evaporators: Vancouver, legendary, Nardwuar. | Canada Safeway Stage at 5:10 pm
Frog Eyes: Beautiful, experimental blues. | RBC Royal Bank Stage at 4:30 pm

The highly anticipated Khatsahlano! is only three days away. This Saturday, West 4th Avenue between Burrard & MacDonald will close from 11am to 6pm for the street party.
According to the Facebook event page, 3,554 people, including me, have RSVPed a resounding “Yes.” 1,118 are considering attending. In short, it’s going to be a blast.
This uber exciting West 4th Music + Art Festival replaces the Hippie Daze of yore, taking into account all Kits residents from ex-hippies to hipster students and families.
The festival will feature five stages of free live music from Vancouver’s finest independent artists. Zulu Records curated the line-up, which ensures a quality playlist. There’s also a fashion show at 2:30 pm and the choreographed “Bust Out” at 2:50 pm, which we blogged about last week. Add to that, numerous sidewalk sales and the Biggest Yard Sale you’ve ever clapped eyes on.
If you haven’t RSVPed yet, get on it.
