Last weekend I participated in the 2010 Ride to Conquer Cancer and 2,252 bike riders collectively we raised over $9.2 million for the BC Cancer Foundation. I personally raised $3,300 with five great Kits businesses helping me out.
Look closely at the photo below and you’ll see the Kitsilano.ca logo on blue on the back of our FLICK Cancer team jerseys.

If you’re interested in riding on a Kitsilano team next year, please be in touch by email.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer is four weeks away and this is your last chance to double dip and support a great cause while getting FREE advertising on Kitsilano.ca.
I’m offering any Kitsilano business that donates to my $2500 fund-raising goal a free month of advertising (we currently charge $200/month) on Kitsilano.ca for every $100 they donate. I figured it’s a win-win all around as you’re helping fight Cancer (and getting a personal tax receipt) while testing out Kitsilano.ca as a hyper-local marketing tool for their business.
To date, four generous Kitsilano businesses agreed with me an took advantage of the offer.
If you like the idea, you’ve got until June 1st to participate. Donate a minimum of $100 online to my fund-raising efforts and fire me an email letting me know who you are and what business you would like to advertise. You can either provide me with a 125×125 banner ad or I can have our designer throw one together for you.

Living in Kitsilano means being blessed with a myriad of choices for restaurants. From Greek to Japanese, traditional to fusion…Kitsilano is a haven of good eats. Having recently figured out that the majority of my weight gain was due to wheat, I decided to kick the wheat habit as much as I could and try and find alternatives. A friend suggested that I phone my favourite places in Kits and ask them if they offered alternatives to wheat on their menu or if I could bring in my own rice/egg pastas for them to prepare. At first I thought this was a silly idea but as I ran out of options for food (and discovered how tricky it is to cook with rice flour), I picked up the phone and called a few restaurants. Here’s what I found…first of all…Kitsilano restaurant owners and managers are generally very open to just about anything. If it can be done, they’ll try to do it. A few places really stood out as pioneers in alternative eating. They include:
Panne Rizo Bakery Café –
– Celiacs, gluten free and wheat free folks will know about Panne Rizo. This little bakery located at Cornwall and Walnut (between Maple and Cypress street) is a gold mine of baked goods, soups and other lovely things. My favourite…try the oreo-like cookies made without wheat. I couldn’t tell they weren’t oreo’s!

Since June 2007, Rocky Mountain Flatbread (RMF) on York Avenue has been adding a voluntary 1% charge to diners bills and calling it a “carbon contribution”. I along with almost every other diner has been swallowing the fee happily even though the wait staff are happy to remove it if your disagree.
The menu explains that diners will be offsetting the environmental impact of producing their meal and that all proceeds will go to innovative solutions for climate protection, promotion of renewable energies and energy efficient technologies. Can’t argue with that.
RMF uses the money – $4,000 to date – to offset its own energy use by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates or work with local schools on green campaigns. They’re currently working with Lord Tennyson Elementary - providing classrooms with energy efficient light bulbs and educating students on energy saving choices such as composting.
Smart move by RMF. By adding the carbon contribution to the bill rather than the menu prices, diners are able to make a conscious choice and feel good about it. For those of you that haven’t been to RMF yet – they use 100% organic ingredients and local products, compost all their food waste, and are outfitted with energy-reducing and reclaimed materials. And they’re the most kid-friendly restaurant in all of Kitsilano.

In celebration of Earth Day and Vancouver’s 30 Days of Sustainability throughout April, May and June, Rocky Mountain Flatbread Company (RMFC) is launching Green Talks. Green Talks is a one hour informal talk once a week at RMFC where social entrepreneurs share their stories of organizations they have founded or work for, which make a difference in our local and global community. The first “Green Talks” will be presented by Karla Fester, the owner of Frog Friendly coffee on April 15th at 6:30pm. Fester will give us the low down on the good, the bad and the ugly of the coffee world and the evening will end with roasting your own wild coffee beans.
So come on down, have a bite to eat, listen to truly inspiring individuals and connect with social citizens who are taking actions to change the world. The full Green Talks schedule is available here.
