Valentine’s Giveaway Final Day: Win $50 to Local Public Eatery!

Valentine’s Day Giveaway Final Day:

$50 to Local Public Eatery, who is hosting an Anti-Valentine’s Party aka a Stop Light Party February 14.

This post is for the anti-Valentines, un-Valentines, the nontraditionalists, haters and daters. Local Public Eatery is hosting an Anti-Valentine’s Day Party alternative February 14, for those who prefer DJs and drink specials to candle light and crooning.

Local will provide Stop Light Party guests with coloured ribbons to signify their “status.” Green means single; A yellow ribbon means you might be, or could soon be single; Red ribbons signify that you’re taken.

Whether you’re on the market, unsure about your status, or dating but not into traditional Valentine’s Day celebrations, Local is the beach front party destination for you.

Share a cocktail in a boot (Lucky Lemonade, El Caeser, Kung Fu Punch, Baja Margarita) and any of Local’s six variations on the 1/2 lb. chuck burger with a new acquaintance. You may find you’re still chatting over their signature gooey chocolate brownie.

How to win:

Like “Kitsilano.ca” on Facebook or comment on our daily Facebook wall post with the prize. We will choose one winner Saturday morning, Feb. 11.

Local Public Eatery, 2210 Cornwall Avenue, 604.734.3589, Kitsilano.ca/local-public-eatery/

New Year’s Eve events in Kitsilano

New Year’s Eve plans have always flummoxed me. When I was a young squirt it was simple. Mom made a bûche de noël and we waited for the countdown on television, usually falling asleep and drooling on the couch cushions before the ball dropped.

As an adult, the more I plan my New Year’s Eve party hopping, the more likely it is the evening will fall flat. That being said, I like to dress up.

My solution: No more house parties or clubs. Just intimate dinner action. That way at least I’m guaranteed good food. Sometimes my husband and I make an extravagant feast at home and head to the beach for a midnight stroll. Or we go to a Kits restaurant event like the ones I’ve listed below. read more »

Last chance for a summer fling with Nimby Burger

Nimby burger and dooblay with hand cut fries, a strawberry milkshake and a chocolate milkshake.

This weekend is your last chance to grab a dooblay, hand cut fries and a shake from the too cool for school Nimby Burger stand and head down to Kits beach. Nimby Burger is open through September 5. The Dog Days of summer are over, but the sun is shining and it’s a long weekend–i.e. a perfect picnic scenario.  If the thought of losing Nimby in a mere three days has shattered your world, never fear, the burgers/shakes/fries will still remain on LOCAL’s late night menu.

Everything you need to know about KitsFest August 12-14

Summer on Kits Beach is never dull. We’re stoked about this late summer beach party and sporting event, KitsFest, which takes place August 12-14.

What

KitsFest celebrates community and healthy living with three vigorous days of sports tournaments. The event has serious scope with sports ranging from basketball, beach tennis and volleyball to weird and wonderful recreation like beach hockey. We’re not kidding. Beach hockey is a real, crowd-drawing sport and it’s going to get its own blog post tomorrow.

When

August 12-14, 9AM to 8PM daily. Visit the website for more details.

Where

KitsFest takes place on Kits Beach. $5 all-day parking is available with EasyPark at the H.R. MacMillan Planetarium–only a 5 minute walk away.

Why

Because we’re sporty Vancouverites. Sweating makes us happy.

Who runs it? Who participates?

KitsFest was launched in 2009 by the Canada One Foundation. The Canada One Foundation reinvests proceeds from KitsFest into the community. Last year Canada One contributed $50,000 to resurfacing the Kits Beach basketball courts. This year they plan to redo the tennis courts.

KitsFest invites all ages to participate. Sports teams can register in advance on the KitsFest website. Family-friendly activities will take place throughout the event. Think face painting, obstacle courses, games and sports (including public ice skating on the silicone ice rink), plus good eats from local restos.

Highlights

Skate-able Silicone Gel Ice Rink on Beach | Killer Kid Zone | Face Painting | Beach Tennis | Baseline Bistro with food from LOCAL Public Eatery and Chronic Tacos

Weather Forecast

Sunny | Low of 14°C | High of 23°C.

Stanley Cup Game 7: Where to watch and when to get there

If you haven’t picked where you’re watching Game 7 tonight, Andrea did a great round up of bars in Kits here. I’ve watched the last two games at Abigail’s Party because I love the new patio season menu. When I went for Game 5, Abigail’s Party was thumping: team spirit, yelling, the works. But when I went to watch Game 6, Abigail’s Party was deserted.  There were no fans there to commiserate with. I stayed anyway. And although everyone in my group agreed that the sablefish croquettes were awesome, we were hoping for more noise.

So for Game 7, I’ve decided to relocate.

I like a mildly rambunctious Canucks fan experience; I don’t like fighting for a stool. I hold out no hope of getting real estate at Local. So I called Migz BBQ on Broadway. They advised me to come at 4:00 PM. They aren’t doing reservations.

Then I called Coppertank Grill, #2 on Andrea’s list of top spots to watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Again, no reservations. A really friendly staffer said “People start lining up at 3:00 PM.”

I’m not sure where I’ll end up watching Game 7. But I know I’ll be staking a claim to a seat starting at 3:00 PM.
