Kits House requests your help sending local families to camp

For over twelve years, Kits House has helped local families who may not be able to afford summer camp, the opportunity to experience the outdoors while spending quality time together, being active and creative, and building stronger relationships.

If you’d like to participate and help Kits House send at risk families to our annual summer camp, you can do so by voting with the Aviva Community Fund campaign. To vote by going to our campaign page. You can vote each day until the end of the first round of voting on Oct. 19th

Yummy Yards’ urban farming means hyper-local produce for Kits

I recently met Emi Do and Mark Seiling (pictured right), the two youthful urban farmers behind Yummy Yards, at a Kits House potluck dinner about food security. They had dirt under their fingernails and a lot of pluck when it came to discussing local food. It turns out they’ve been growing veg and leafy greens out of eight neighbourhood yards located mostly in Dunbar/Southlands.

They just emailed me to let me know that Yummy Yards has an abundance of  crops that they’d like to share, but it’s challenging to get the word out. Yummy Yards is all about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)–a global movement that connects consumers with food producers. I thought I’d facilitate some connecting.

Attend the Kits House Celebration this Saturday, August 27

Before you head to the Pink Salmon Festival Sunday, check out this golden family event at the historic Kits House this Saturday. Kits House will be undergoing a large-scale redevelopment starting Fall 2011. Join them to celebrate the history and future of Kits House before they close for construction. The celebration includes Kits House partners, staff, volunteers and Kits neighbourhood residents. It takes place August 27, 1:00-4:00pm at 7th & Vine. There will be good eats, contests, games and more.

Reserve your spot at Kitsilano’s Biggest Garage Sale

At Khatsalano! The West 4th Ave BIA Music+Art Street Festival Saturday, July 23rd, Kits Neighbourhood House will be hosting Kitsilano’s Biggest Garage Sale from 11am- 6pm on W. Fourth, between Balsam and Trafalgar. You can either sell out of your car, or bring a table or blanket for your stuff. Whichever option you pick, Kits House advises that you deck out your plot, play your tunes, dress up in costume and get creative. Prizes will be handed out for the “most awesome plot, best tunes and best stuff!”

Reserving a 12 x 12 ft. plot will cost you $25. Plot fees directly support Kits House programs and tax receipts are available upon request. Kitsilano’s Biggest Garage Sale is part of the Khatsalano street festival on 4th Ave (between Burrard and MacDonald Street) which includes featuring 5 stages of FREE live music.
